Cowboy Junkies to Make Album Covering Vic Chesnutt Songs
I saw this on several sites recently. Mixed feelings— I’m fond of the Junkies, and I know that they were good friends with him—heĀ opened for them a number of times, and was part of the Trinity revisited project—but I so rarely like his songs done by other people. So much of what feels essential to his songs is his phrasing, his voice. I know people say he’s an acquired taste, but some whole layer of meaning and soul vanishes from his songs when other people do them. Of course, that’s probably the best and fastest way to make sure his songs aren’t forgotten or overlooked now that he’s gone, but I’m still wary.
