“Come Pick Me Up (demo),” Ryan Adams. A great find from Patrick Cooper, by way of This Morning I Am Born Again. This demo version of the Heartbreaker classic has a shaggy, half-baked quality that puts the emphasis on those bitter, scorched-earth lyrics. The absence of backup singer Kim Ritchey makes all the difference — Coop has it exactly right: “The song meant one thing when a second voice joined the chorus. The song meant another when no one did.” (download)
That Rescue Blues 7” is one of my treasured possessions. This has been since I got it my favorite version of Come Pick Me Up, a song I still think is somewhat overrated in his catalogue but is certainly inescapable. One of the things I love about RA is how different the various versions of songs can sound, how much they are changed by who if anyone sings harmony, the tempo, etc. I thought the update of this song in the 2008 and 2009 shows was interesting but nowhere near as affecting.
